Tap Dance

About Kelsey

Kelsey Leonard has been tap dancing since the age of 3. A Portland native, she trained with the beloved Cindy Brenn before earning her Master of Arts from NYU Gallatin in Tap Dance. She has studied and performed with some of the world’s top tap dancers and is deeply passionate about the artistry and history of tap.

Kelsey has founded and led three nonprofit organizations: Central Oregon Rhythm Project, Portland Tap Alliance, and now Portland Tap Company, which features the Portland Youth Tap Company. She co-founded the Portland Tap Dance Festival, bringing world-renowned tap dancers to train and inspire hundreds of students from Portland and beyond. She’s also shared the stage with many master tap dancers performing in shows across the nation.

With over 20 years of teaching experience, Kelsey’s approach to instruction is rooted in strong technique, musicality, historical repertoire, and exposure to the broader tap dance community. Her award-winning choreography has been performed nationally, and her students have trained and performed at festivals, competitions, and professional showcases across the country.
